May PTO meeting minutes

May 27, 2009 PTO Meeting

Meeting was started at 7pm.  Additions to the agenda were made.

Approval of the April Minutes:

  • Christine made a motion to adopt the April minutes and Sally supported this motion.  It passed with 100% approval.

Parent Council Report

  • Amy could not be here.  There was no April report so the last two month highlights are listed.  2009-2010 PTO officers across the district will be asked to meet on a September date so as to help plan for our district transitions.  Amy would like to be Parent Council Representative.  Tonya would like to be the leader of our Green School progress.

President Report

  • Tammy formally thanked PTO officers who served.
  •  Tammy and Sally will be in contact with committee chairs to determine interest for next year.
  • Many thanks to Cheri for her hard work during Staff Appreciation week.
  • Thank you staff for the Volunteer Lunch!

Principal’s Report

  • Dr. Kregar will be visiting to review the proposed boundary changes.  Tara thanked PTO for the Staff Appreciate week.
  • Move Up Day will take place this year.  Our sections are more stable this year so we felt pretty solid about participating in Move Up Day.  Other schools in the district do this and report positive results.
  • Staffing Changes were shared in an email from Tara.  Smith = Grade 1, Malkus =  Grade 2, Pulter = Grade 3 and Staudt = Grade 5.  Mrs. O’Donnell will be leaving for a new position on Friday.
  • Yearbook signing took place yesterday.  Even without yearbooks, it was a huge success.  Yearbooks will be in sometime next week.  Great work Jenna!
  • Recess before lunch?  Two schools in our district do this currently – Edgewood and Central.  How would they wash their hands?  Hand sanitizer could be purchased.  Parents mentioned kids would eat better and kids would get more physical activity when their stomach is not full.  This could be a possibility for next year.
  • Field day on Monday in the afternoon with a rain date on Tuesday.
  • Our last day assembly is on June 5th, Friday at 10:15am.
  • Thank you to PTO for a great year!

Treasurer’s Report

  • $395 from box tops
  • Dare T-Shirts were ordered
  • Paid quarterly taxes
  • Auction money is still coming in ($300 for 2 week Boardway camp for ages 2-17, 10-5pm Monday-Thursday July 27-August 7th or August 10-21st)

Reconfiguration Map Report from Kregar and Sharp

  • Boundaries changes for closing two schools and two it was based on two things.

1.  The greatest number of kids were moved together so that kids could be with former school friends.

 2.  In the past there were jagged boundaries

  • Wardcliff will divide between Bennett Woods and Cornell
  • Central will divide between Bennett Woods and Hiawatha
  • A little over 100 additional students will be coming to Cornell, by we lose 5th grade.  We will become a three unit school with four units at some grade levels.  A projected enrollment of 380 for 2010-2011.  Kregar states that class size were reasonable.  Kregar states that class size will not be near the teacher contract maximum numbers.
  • Boundaries will have room for growth.
  • Redistricting is good for 3-5 years.  If subdivisions build up or further building takes place then we may need to look to this again.  This will be continually monitored and future redistricting will be done only as needed.
  • Number of buses needed: closed schools will need to add one bus each for the walkers.  1 ¼ mile will be kept for next year.  A parent mentioned that traffic patterns at our school are hectic due to buses being cut.  5/6 graders will ride with elementary school children.  The 7/8 kids will ride with the high school students.

New Business

  • Front Entryway Improvements Spring 2009  - $1230.00 projected cost.  Tena motioned to approve this and Jenn supported it.  This passed with no objections.
  • Carl our day custodian would like a gas trimmer.  The district has one trimmer that Carl has to order to use.  This would be locked and not loaned out.  The cost would be about $300.  Cindy wanted to know if there was a more eco-friendly one.  A two stroke motor is very eco-unfriendly.  An electrical or battery operated version would be a better choice. Solarcooker.com is a website that lists more energy efficient products.  We wondered where Carl uses it.  Tammy will find out more information.  Tammy will find out where he uses it and if there is a more eco-friendly option.  A motion was made by Kristin to give up to $500 for maintenance equipment upon Tammy’s approval.  Tonya seconded this motion.  It was approved by all present.
  • Motion to change bylaws regarding PTO officer positions – remove social chair, enrichment chair and fundraising positions.  These positions would be moved to a committee status rather than a board position.  Jenn motioned to accept this change.  Cindy seconded this motion.  This passed with 100% support.
  • 2009-2010 budget yellow sheet was reviewed.  In efforts to reduce the amount of money that parents pay toward “classroom enrichment donations” at the start of the school year, PTO will determine a per pupil rate to be deposited into each grade level’s fund.  $5 per kids would be a total of $1,750.  This money could be used for Time for Kids or Planners.  $18,460 was proposed for next year’s budget.  Tonya motioned to approve this amount and Christine seconded this motion.  All voted to pass this motion.
  • Concrete pad  = $750 for recycle bin.  Cindy made a motion to approve this Jenn seconded this motion.  It was approved with no objections.
  • Officer Elections:  President–Tammy, Sally–President Elect, Jennifer– Treasurer, Nicole –Secretary.  Kristin motioned to elect officers and Jenn seconded it.  All present voted to support this motion.  Congratulations!!!
