PTO Minutes
October 21, 2009

I. Call to Order – 7:04pm
II. Welcome by President Tammy Deppong – Testing Market Day goodies. Next month is pie month, so we are sampling a pie.
III. Approval of Minutes – Motion to approve by Jennifer Nevins-Lacasse, seconded by Christine McQuaid. Discussion. Motion passed
IV. Additions to the Agenda
a. Andrew Saultz – Running for school board
b. Subtraction – Nature’s Crossing presentation to be moved to next month.
V. Andrew Saultz introduced himself and explained his desire (and qualifications) to run for the school board. Tammy also pointed out there is a second candidate who was unable to attend – Damian Fisher.
VI. Principal’s Report – Tara Fry
a. Thanked PTO for funding 2 clubs this year - Nature’s Garden and Drama Club
b. MEAP testing continues through next week. Running smoothly.
c. Upcoming Events:
i. 10/23 – Health Dept. teaching hand washing class
ii. 10/30 – Halloween parade. Weather permitting; parade will be outside on the track.
iii. Halloween Parties at 2:00 on October 30th.
iv. Parent/Teacher conferences. November 3rd, 5th and 10th
v. OEF Banquet – November 19th. Tickets available in the office. Will be held at the Lansing Country Club
vi. Hand Sanitizer: Fire Marshall said dispensers containing alcohol cannot be in open hallways. As a result, the purchase was put on hold.
vii. Reminder H1N1 Clinic is scheduled for next week.
VII. President’s Report – Tammy Deppong
a. Thank you to Jenn Holcomb for Innisbrook sale.
b. Thank you to Cindy Roark for Walk to School Day.
c. Spirit sale will be coming out in November
d. Need volunteers to help with “Green School Committee”. Contact Tammy if interested.
e. Recycling bins are here. Additional bins being dropped off by Granger to help sort.
f. 3 places have contacted Tammy for potential social events/fundraisers
i. Edru skating rink in Holt. Tuesday – Thursday night for event (in November/December). 100 kids required at $5/child. Parents for free (skates $1.00/In-line skates $2.00)
ii. Zap Zone - $20 tickets. 60 person minimum (school would receive 20% of ticket sales)
iii. Applebees – Pancake Breakfast; Cornell night at Applebees. Pancake breakfast would require committing to a date. The evening would be more loosely structured. Cornell would receive a percentage of the sales. Jennifer Keith will request additional information from Hiawatha parent who had participated in the evening event.
VIII. Treasurer’s Report – Jennifer Nevins-Lacasse
a. September – paid out total of $

c. Start up fees to teachers
d. PTO bond and supplies
e. Income came in from popcorn sales in October
f. Supplemental classroom fees paid out.
IX. Parent Council Report – Christie Crichton
a. Provided update from September Parent Council meeting
b. Discussion regarding inclusion of Montessori in transition of schools
c. October 12th had Q & A with school board candidates
d. MSU Hockey night
e. October 22nd – Parent Council hosting event at OHS on how to talk to your kids about drugs.
X. New Business – No new business.
XI. Committee Reports
a. Transition Committee Report
i. Tara updated on Middle School transition committee. One meeting has been held so far, next meeting is on 10/28. At each meeting, they have done a walkthrough of the middle schools. The school board will make the decision as to which middle school will be 5/6 and which will be 7/8
ii. The Montessori Committee has had 2 meetings. Trying to figure out what their configuration will look like.
iii. Tammy discussed the elementary transition committee meeting. One meeting has been held. Separated into 4 groups and looked at different things that will need to be transitioned from sending to receiving schools. Another meeting is scheduled for next week. 2 meetings also scheduled for November.
b. Enrichment Grant Updates – We have paid out 1 enrichment grant so far this school year, it was a joint grant with all the 2nd grade teachers for a time for kids subscription for all of their kids. Other teachers are working on grants and should be submitting soon.
c. Innisbrook – Can order from Innisbrook online all year and Cornell will still receive profits from sales.
i. $13, 904 was raised. Cornell will receive half of this for a total of $6,952.
ii. Jenn Holcomb’s 5th grade class sold the most. 2nd place – Mrs. Schoen’s class; 3rd place Mrs. Sinila’s class.
iii. Ben Sinila was the top seller.
d. Nature’s Crossing – Lorri King (MOVED TO NOVEMBER MEETING)
e. Movie Morning – New Chair – Johanna Foster. The movie morning will likely be held in November.
f. Family Fun Night – Still looking for a chair. If anyone is interested, please contact Tammy.
g. Yearbook – 2 Kindergarten parents have agreed to serve as co-chairs for the yearbook committee.
XII. Old Business
a. The school directory is done and a draft is located by the office.
XIII. Adjournment – A motion was made to adjourn by meeting by Melissa Beal and seconded by Jason Gutting. Motion passed and the meeting was adjourned at 8:03pm.
